I have known Matt Elliott for 10 years. In that time we have worked together in a few different areas. Matt helped me in my professional area as a pro surfer with training, psychology and also always bringing new and exciting techniques to competing. Matt has always gone the extra yard in becoming better in his role as a mentor and coach. Exploring new areas and always willing to test himself. In saying that he was always open to listen and learn from his colleagues. As a friend he has always been loyal and honest and always available to help out where possible. I highly recommend Matt and believe he will take every opportunity with both hands and give it his best. Regards Mick Fanning 3 x ASP World Surfing Champion
"I was fortunate enough to be coached by Matt from 2001-2006 at the Canberra Raiders. I was a young man from a small farming community in regional NSW who just moved out of home to follow my dream of becoming a Rugby League player. One of the greatest things I loved about being coached by Matt was his ability to think and create drills and coaching techniques which were outside of the box. He challenged his players to continually to improve their games and always found ways to help extract the best out of his players. I believe I played my best football under Matt's coaching and he has helped me to become the man I am today".
I have seen a lot of coaches in my time, each with different styles and attitudes to attaining high performance and success. I can say that it takes a rare breed of coach to deeply understand the intricacies of each individual's physical, technical and emotional needs. Matt Elliott is one of these men. I have not seen a coach with such a diverse range of interests and skills that enables Matt to empathise and motivate a vast array of athletes. Whether it be 5 minutes listening to him or 5 hours engaging with him, it is invaluable time that makes you go away reflective and with a new resolve to be better.
Matt Elliott joined us as a video analyst on NRL.com for the 2015 Telstra Premiership season, presenting "The Breakdown" – a weekly analysis show on the official website of the National Rugby League. Matt's rugby league insight and coaching experience at the highest level was invaluable as he dissected the way NRL teams attack and defend. His ability to explain complex structures and patterns in an easy to understand way allowed fans a different perspective on how their teams play. Matt's media professionalism saw him not only present the show on his own but also have a big hand in producing the show in terms of scripting and selecting footage with our production partners Chief Entertainment. It has been a pleasure having Matt as part of the NRL.com team and we hope to continue our association into the future.
Matt was a contributing writer for Big League magazine throughout the 2015 season and offered excellent insight not only into the game of rugby league itself, but the emotional, mental and physical challenges that players and coaches would experience in certain situations during a season and what strategies they could use to manage and overcome those. His views are educated and informative and provided a different look at the pressures professional sportspeople endure. On top of all that, Matt is fantastic to work with--attentive, efficient and a great collaborator.
It’s hard to write a testimonial for someone like Mathew Elliott as words may not be able to express the positive influence he made to so many people’s lives, including mine. I was privileged to work alongside Matt Elliott within a high performance professional sporting environment over a period of 18 years. I was immersed within an extremely healthy culture created by Matt, which challenged everyone within it to be at their best. Matt is an innovator, an intellect, someone that has never been afraid to challenge popular thinking in the search for personal and collective improvement. Matt has a proven track record in mentoring hundreds of high achievers under his charge not only improving their sporting prowess, but more importantly for him, helping them become better people. From my perspective Matt’s great skill in creating effective group dynamics within team sport has a foundation in relation to challenging individual team members to ask themselves who they want to become rather than what they wanted to achieve. A Coach’s life within Professional sport brings many challenges often magnified by the amount of scrutiny which is placed upon every decision they make. Matt has always dealt with victory and defeat with great dignity, often shouldering the burden of many upon his own back, a sign of great leadership, and integrity. Matt taught me that when striving for success you can never be afraid of change or failure, as anything worth striving for has to involve change and some level of failure along the way. Matt’s career has been built upon a foundation of Sacrifice and hard work, he has an amazing wealth of knowledge and expertise, but more importantly a personal drive for a greater understanding of many more academic subjects, he offers a wealth of knowledge to anyone who is willing to listen.
Matthew Elliott became a regular and integral part of the Fox Sports News rugby league commentary team during the 2015 NRL season.
His frank and forthright analysis, plus his staunch opinions, often stimulates debate and responses from both our TV Channel viewers and website audience – which is what both our channel and website are about – breaking and responding to News.
As such we are keen to use Matthew in the same role next season and well into the future.
